Why Should I Have My Air Ducts Cleaned?

The Benefits of an Air Duct Cleaning

Spring is on the way, and it’s time to start getting your home ready for the warmer days ahead. And while you may have started piecing together this year’s spring cleaning checklist, there is one important area of your humble abode that usually doesn’t make the cut: your air ducts.

If you have an HVAC system, chances are, your air ducts (and overall system) have not been sparkling clean since the day they were first installed. And although it’s not necessary to have your air ducts cleaned monthly, it is important to have a professional clean them annually.

The Nassau County air duct and HVAC cleaning professionals at SERVPRO of East Meadow/Westbury share a few reasons why you should schedule a cleaning with our team this year.

Improves Indoor Air Quality

We regret to inform you, but there’s a chance your indoor air quality has seen better days. And if you haven’t had your air ducts cleaned in quite some time, you could be doing more harm than good to not only your HVAC system but your well-being, too.

According to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), approximately 90 percent of Americans spend a majority of their time indoors — and some of the pollutants they’re faced with are two to five times worse than those found outdoors. Keeping this in mind, it’s possible that common indoor allergens — such as pet dander, dust, and dirt — have infiltrated your air ducts and are being dispersed every time you use your air conditioner. Additionally, if there is mold present in your unit’s condensate drip pan, that could spell trouble: mold growths and spores will be dispersed throughout your home — not a good situation to be in.

In a conscious effort to help you and your loved ones breathe fresher, cleaner air, it’s imperative to consider scheduling an air duct and HVAC cleaning with our team. When one of our trained technicians examines your air ducts and HVAC system, they check and clean the air ducts, as well as several other components (e.g., cooling coils, motors, fan, etc.) of your central comfort unit to make sure you’re in the clear.

By giving your air ducts and HVAC system a “spa day” from our team, you can look forward to a noticeable difference in your indoor air quality, as well as a much more efficient system.

Prolong Your HVAC System’s Lifespan

Speaking of efficiency, when an HVAC unit is properly maintained over the years, it can last anywhere between 10 to 15 years. However, failure to keep up with routine maintenance — such as annual tune-ups and cleanings — can make it short-lived; this means you’ll have to replace it much sooner than you had originally anticipated.

The reason behind a shorter lifespan is that when your air ducts are caked in various allergens (e.g., pollen, dust mites, fabric remnants, etc.), it will make it much harder for your HVAC unit to “breathe” easily and produce the comfort you’re looking for. Furthermore, the unnecessary strain can break down essential components quicker, as well as gradually increase your monthly energy bills.

In addition to your annual tune-ups from your HVAC service provider, it’s imperative to schedule air duct and HVAC system cleanings with our team. Using a series of special, high-quality tools, our professionals will free up dirt and debris, followed by using a high-suction vacuum to ensure your entire system is spotless from head to toe. Additionally, depending on the situation, our technicians may apply a chemical biocide (this helps eliminate other microbiological contaminants) to further “seal the deal.”

Why a Commercial Cleaning Company is Beneficial

1/27/2022 (Permalink)

What a Commercial Cleaning Company Can Do For You

Keeping your workplace safe and clean should be at the forefront of your to-do list this year. While standard cleaning services seem to be effective, it's a professional commercial cleaning company that will come in to deep clean and remove all the hidden dirt and allergens throughout the building.

The team here at SERVPRO of East Meadow/Westbury has some examples of why the help of a high-quality, professional commercial cleaning company is needed in addition to your standard cleaning crew.

Deep Clean the Carpeting

You may not realize it, but carpets can hold years of gunk and dirt because they are extremely absorbent — almost like sponges. Aside from potentially harvesting mold and moisture build-up, carpeting also houses debris transferred from the soles of shoes. And while using a standard vacuum to clean your carpeting regularly is great for preventative maintenance, matters below the surface level might need a little more TLC.

To get to those hard-to-reach germs and grime that are deeply embedded in the fibers, you'll need to rely on the help of a commercial cleaning company. Using top-notch equipment, a professional cleaning team can go beyond eye level and help remove layers of build-up that may be contributing to the rise of indoor allergies and poor indoor air quality in your building.

Remove Strange Odors

You never want strange smells to linger in a professional space since they can harm your employees’ well-being. And while there may be a plethora of reasons why an odor forms in the first place (e.g., lingering mold, chemical usage, etcetera), you don’t want to leave the mystery unsolved and mask the odor with a temporary solution.

When entrusting the help of a professional team of odor removal and deodorization specialists, you can rest assured knowing that they’ll be able to save the day in no time. Having completed IICRC technical classes, a professional can help identify the odor, discover where it’s coming from, and help remove its presence over time with several professional-grade odor removal products that do more than cover it up.

Spruce up the Upholstery

Whether it’s a waiting area full of chairs or a sofa in the break room, your upholstery needs to be professionally cleaned periodically. Regardless of whether it appears to look fine at the surface level, just like carpeting, upholstery can absorb dust, dander, and other particulate matter over time.

Having your furnishings cleaned by a commercial cleaning company is a surefire way to eliminate upholstery odors and dirt build-up on a deeper level. Additionally, relying on the help of an expert can preserve your upholstery — slowing down the visibility of wear and tear for the years to come.

Air/HVAC Duct Cleaning

HVAC Duct Before and After Cleaning HVAC Duct Before and After Cleaning by SERVPRO of East Meadow/Westbury

SERVPRO of East Meadow/Westbury Now Cleans Ducts!

More and more people on Long Island are becoming aware of indoor air pollution.  It is definitely an area of growing concern and is something that can easily be prevented with air duct and HVAC cleaning. In fact, you’ve probably seen some companies promote this service which will improve your indoor air quality on T.V. or received advertising to this effect in the mail.

How does cleaning the air ducts and HVAC system help to improve indoor air quality? When one of our qualified technicians cleans your air ducts and HVAC system, they typically check and clean various cooling and heating system components.  These can include but is not limited to grilles and diffusers, supply and return ducts, cooling coils, heat exchangers, fans, motors, and condensate drip pans.

When one or more of these components is not properly maintained, the parts can become contaminated by pollen, other debris, and dust.  If there is moisture present, it can increase the chances for mold growth and spores to be released into the indoor air.  These contaminants can cause a reaction or symptom in the people who are exposed to them.

If you decide that you are going to have your air ducts and HVAC system cleaned, be sure that the vendor is going to be cleaning all the components of your system.  If one or more elements aren't cleaned correctly, it can result in a re-contamination of the entire system once it is energized.

While there are various methods that can be used to clean your air ducts, standards have been established by industry associations.  Typically, special tools will be used to remove any dirt and debris, and then a high-powered vacuum will be used to vacuum the dirt and debris out.

Once the air ducts have been thoroughly cleaned, our service technician may want to apply chemical biocides, which will kill any microbiological contaminants.  This would be applied inside the ducts and to the other components of the system.  And in some instances where there are signs of mold growth, a chemical treatment may also be required to cover the surfaces of the air ducts.

So how do you know if you need your air ducts and HVAC system require cleaning?  What you can do is to do a visual inspection to see if there are any mold or dust deposits or if there is a musty odor, or if someone is suffering from allergies more than normal.  These are all signs that a professional air duct-cleaning specialist should come out and inspect your systems.

Air ducts and HVAC systems should be regularly cleaned to help keep dirt, dust, and mold from being spread throughout the building and degrade the indoor air quality. With proper maintenance performed by a qualified air ducts and HVAC cleaning professional, you will ensure that the indoor air quality stays as high as possible.
