Preventable Water Damage Tips

12/27/2020 (Permalink)

frozen downspout Keep Your Downspouts Unclogged to Prevent Ice Buildup

Every year water damage on Long Island causes millions of dollars in damages. It can be the result of pipes bursting, leaks, or natural disasters. Even though water can cause a lot of damage, there are several things you can do to reduce the severity of the damage.

Simple Prevention Techniques
With some simple prevention techniques, you can prevent or dramatically reduce water damage costs. When you leave your home for vacation, turn off your main water line. This will ensure that flooding will not be the result of a  frozen pipe that has burst, or a hose. When the weather is frigid, allow your faucets to drip slowly but regularly, that way any water that freezes will have room to expand without bursting a pipe.

Make sure to clean gutters and downspouts frequently, so clogs from leaves, dirt, and other debris don’t cause gutter damage or any overflowing water to enter your home. Always have your hose connections checked yearly and regularly check on your appliances, especially those that have a water supply. This will be more cost and energy efficient, and it could also prevent a major catastrophe.

Look around for Small Signs of Water Damage
Also, pay close attention to any signs that water damage is occurring. If you notice a water stain on the ceiling or water spot on wood, that could be a sign of a leak. That leak could continue to warp various building materials until you have significant damage inside the structure of your home. Make sure all appliance hose fittings and connections are properly tightened and sealed. This could be a refrigerator ice maker line, washing machine hose, dishwasher, etc. Remove and replace all old caulk and grout around sinks, tubs, and tile work. It's prudent to always check for leaks around faucets, drains, and water supply lines. Test your sump pump at least once each season to ensure that it will properly transport water out through a drainpipe and away from the building.

Protect Your Furnishings and Other Valuables
Keep valuable items and furniture off of areas that are prone to flooding by placing them on tables or supporting them in another way. If a flood occurs, at least some of your property will be protected by being higher than the floor. Inspect your roof carefully for any shingle or flashing damage , especially near chimneys. Ensure that your R insulation factor is sufficient for your attic. This will all but eliminate the potential for ice damming on the roof and gutters. By completing these simple fixes, you can save yourself from potential water damage costs later.

Weatherproof Your Home
Before winter begins, be sure and disconnect all water hoses from around your home and turn the interior water valves off completely. Invest in foam covers for your outside spigots. This  fix will insulate the area around the taps which will help prevent freezing and water damage. Furthermore, be sure to seal around window cracks and sealants around doors to further prevent water from entering your home during a storm or flood.

If, after all of your proactive efforts, water damage becomes an issue, call SERVPRO of East Meadow/Westbury for an immediate response to mitigate any damage, and save you time and money. We can restore your property to preloss condition "Like it never even happened."

Ice hazards at home

1/8/2020 (Permalink)

While we know that driving on the road can pose dangerous risks during the winter season, once we reach home we feel safe and secure and don’t think twice about our journey home. Other than the driveway itself being a little icy, we may think our home is safe from hazards we just survived outside. Sadly, this is not the case. There are plenty of ice hazards at home that could cause not just bodily harm but home damage and water damage, too. Keep an eye out for the following ice hazards at home.

Sidewalks

This may be a no-brainer, but since sidewalks primarily are your responsibility to keep clear and ice-free, It’s important that you stay aware since they can certainly be a hazardous environment. If we're not regularly salting the sidewalks on our home's property, then we might end up getting someone hurt if they slip on it. We might even injure ourselves by walking over to the mailbox or just saying hello to a neighbor. Keep an eye out for the ice and walk safely.

Roofing

Here’s another aspect of ice hazards that isn't often thought about. However, ice can develop on the roof just the same as anywhere else. When water remains on the roof and then freezes, it can cause home damage by making those shingles chip and crack. As the ice melts, water can seep into the cracks and cause water damage within the attic and throughout the home as water has a way of winding around wherever it pleases.  It's best to have a professional team take care of any damage caused by a damaged roofing.

Windows

When the temperature drops outside so does the temperature of the glass windows in our home.  We all know how important it is to manage the humidity during the winter to help keep us and our homes healthy.  However, too much humidity, combined with leaky, poor insulated windows, can have us looking at one reason we can notice icy windows.  The moisture buildup on and around your windows can lead to water damage and mold growth. Be sure to be on the lookout for icy windows and have that issue repaired -- immediately.

If you find yourself experiencing damage, make sure the team you call is professional and swift. SERVPRO of East Meadow/Westbury is at the ready 24/7, no matter the emergency. To receive assistance for any type of damage, get in contact with us today at 516-334-2927!

Staying Safe: Beat The Heat!

8/13/2019 (Permalink)

Staying out of the heat (for the most part) this summer can be the easiest way to stay safe -- especially when that AC dial is cranked down low! But most of us on Long Island want to enjoy what our county has to offer, and that usually includes the beach, lots of sunlight, parks, and our own backyards! So in the spirit of summer and staying cool, we’ve got a few ways to beat the damage from heat, while enjoying it as best you can, safely!

Don’t Forget Water!

While the summer of alcohol-infused seltzer drinks are upon us, it’s important to not forget about that other clear liquid in the cooler -- water! Staying hydrated while doing almost anything is an imperative part to a healthy and safe summer. Be sure to consumer at the very least, one half-gallon of water per day in order to keep yourself functioning properly.

Watch Out For Dry Patches

It’s important to note that even though you’re not lighting a fire near plants and shrubbery, that they can’t ignite with the right conditions. Make sure you’re planning on watering your plants and greens at LEAST once per day, when there isn’t direct sunlight overhead. This prevents the risk of them drying out, and becoming an accomplice to a rather harmless fire that spiraled out of control.

Monitor Your Humidity

Checking your humidity levels is just as important as anything else, since that can lead to costly repairs, extensive damage, and other issues if not treated! The best way to battle humidity indoors is to invest in a quality dehumidifier and eliminate unwanted moisture in the air. Additionally, make sure you’re staying cool outdoors and out of humidity as much as possible! The thick air can make it harder to breathe, and can cause uncomfortable situations under your clothing!

For over three decades, SERVPRO has been helping all types of homes and businesses fight against the conditions that summer brings. When something goes wrong, you’re going to need a company who can make it right. To learn more about how SERVPRO Of East Meadow/Westbury can assist in your time of need this summer, give us a call today! 516-334-2927
